It is just my personal idea.
Gifting is a part of nature. Everyone does it and everyone wants to do it. But I seldoms receive things that I actually want. In fact, most of the time, I don't need much.
Shopping is often an enjoyable activity. If there is something I want and can afford, I would rather buy it myself. It is the more satisfying than having somebody else buy it and give it to me as a gift. I don't want others to take away my enjoyment. The only exception is when I cannot buy it myself, or at least cannot buy it easily, because in that case, the enjoyment of purchasing is no longer exist.
On the other hand, receiving a present is not always a happy experience, especially when it is something I don't want. It would be rude to reject it, and reselling it does not feel much better. So I end up keeping it, and it sits forever in a corner of my wardrobe, closet, or drawer.
The worst part is that I feel obliged to return the favor, and I am very bad at choosing gifts. Not to mention that I have to consider the recipient's habits, preferences in colors and styles, and even the correct size or price of the gift.
So what should you do instead? Just give me a card. It does not cost much, but it contains your heartfelt message and good wishes, which money cannot buy. And when the time comes, I can easily give you a card in return.
